Central MD Copperheads

Branding
I was approached to make a logo for a baseball team in Central Maryland called the Copperheads. The client requested a snake-like C for the logo. I wanted the final product to have that high-contrast, high blackpoint look that pro team logos often have, so I kept that in mind when designing and placing the shadows and highlights.
The client also requested I make a secondary logo of just a pair of eyes.
As for the type aspect of the logo, I originally went with a cursive, as I thought it would work well thematically with snake-y forms. However, the client shared concerns that the players may not be able to read cursive due to their young age, so I switched to a sans-serif instead, and added the fangs to the descenders of the lowercase P's to keep things interesting.
Not to be a nerd or anything, but those 2 dots above the eyes version of the logo are actually another set of eyes! The parietal eyes, while not capable of true “imagery” vision, are photoreceptors that can sense light and shadow, which help reptiles and amphibians better sense the environment around them. Pretty cool, huh?
I additionally incorporated the teeth of the copperhead into the logo. As a member of the viper family, copperheads have a set of hinged front fangs that lay against the roof of their mouth until their jaws open and the fangs spring forth!
This is a real team member, so I blurred their face for their privacy. But I wanted to show how the team styled their jerseys using the logo!
